Neurological conditions & the bladder

There are many different neurological conditions that can affect the bladder including;

  • Spinal cord injury
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • And many more

The bladder can be affected in a number of different ways including incontinence and/or difficulty emptying.

Careful urological assessment and long term follow up is recommended in patients with neurological conditions affecting the bladder.

Urodynamics is usually required for evaluation.

Treatment aims not only to control symptoms such as incontinence or difficulty emptying but also identify patients with high pressure bladders who are at risk of bladder and kidney damage without treatment to reduce these pressures.  Fluoroscopic urodynamic studies measure the bladder pressure.
